About Alchemy Coffee

Alchemy is a destination that caters to the neighborhood and visitors alike and focuses on becoming a standard in quality coffee where everyone is welcome.

The motif on our coffee bags is the Adinkra heart symbol for Sankofa. Sankofa is a part of the Twi language of Ghana meaning “to retrieve”, or “to go back and get what you forgot”. Sankofa is often associated with the proverb,”Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenki”, which translates to It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.

During slavery African identity, culture, and language were being erased as families were separated and essentially destroyed and disrupted generations of families. Sankofa became one of many north stars that would guide lost generations through the wilderness as we remember who we were so that we can know where we are going. The Kanji found on our bagged coffee pays homage to our founders’ late Japanese grandmother and in the practice of Sankofa… remember who I am and where I come from as I move forward.
